Churriana is a small town located in the Guadalhorce valley between Alhaurín de la Torre, Torremolinos and Málaga city, and only a few kilometres from Málaga Airport.

Archaeological remains from the Phoenicians have been discovered in Churriana. The Romans also left their footprint there by an aquaduct where their intentions was to channel water from the Fuente del Rey spring in Churriana to Málaga city, but in fact never served its intended purpose due to pressures from local landowners.

Famous international writers such as Ernest Hemmingway, Gerald Brenan and Julio Caro Baroja have all lived in Churriana. Ernest Hemmingway’s novel For Whom the Bell Tolls takes place during the Spanish Civil War, was based on real events and tells of an American named Robert Jordan fighting with Spanish soldiers on the Republican side. It was largely based upon Hemingway's experience of living in Spain and reporting on the war.

The Consul, which was once a grand residence where Politicians and famous people spent their summer holidays, is now one of Spain’s premier catering colleges. Students from this college are regulary accepted by leading hotels and restaurants in Spain and around the world.

Residential tourism has become increasingly important and a growing number of foreigners are acquiring properties in Churriana due to its central location. There has consequently been a fair bit of modern development, with smart new urbanisations and new villas.
